Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of individual characteristics, family background and life of the academy on ego-identity of cadets at the Armed Forces Nursing Academy.

Method : The subjects of this study included 221 cadets from 1st to 4th grade enrolled at the AFNA. The data were analysed using SPSS Win 13.0 program.

Results : Results are summarized as follows: 1) the ego-identity average score of cadets at the AFNA was 3.41 on a 5 point scale; 2) among individual characteristics and family background, there were statistically significant differences in ego-identity scores according to MBTI, self-perceived health, motivation for applying to the academy and family atmosphere; 3) academic year, adaptation to the life at the academy and experience of leadership role also showed statistically significant influence on ego-identity.

Conclusion: Instructors and disciplinary officers should help cadets to develop ego identity by continuously conducting basic physical exercise training, providing more leadership opportunities for cadets, helping them to adapt at the academy, and giving appropriate guidance to the new generations of cadets.
